Words are windows into people’s thoughts, lives and cultures. Reading is a great way to learn, to escape and to explore. I love to read and I tried hard to get my children interested in reading at young ages. During the summer we are at the library at least three times a week. It is a great way to show them all that they can enjoy through books.
Out of six children…only my youngest is an avid reader. The other five…not so much. My oldest son will read..but it has to be something he is interested in…such as his business interests.
Reading, for my special needs children, is torture. It is such a struggle for them; they almost consider it punishment. 🙂 That is hard for me…because i realize how much they miss out on. However, i just try to trade places with them in my mind and I think… what if i had to learn everything through math processes? It would be torture to me. So, in that way, i can relate.
One of my boys is interested in writing a book. He is special needs also, but he loves farms. He wants to write a book on farming. I have been encouraging him. If it engages him and he can work on writing and then reading what he writes that is a good thing.
In any case, i do love the fact that my youngest daughter loves to read. She gets a thrill out of settling down with a book and just enjoying her time in another world. She has a good vocabulary and she is a bit dramatic so she gets into books like Junie B. Jones, and Ramona Quimby . I have to admit…i love them too. 🙂
