Today my 8 year old daughter is filled with joy.  Want to know why?  The thing that filled her with joy is just that a female classmate invited her to a birthday party at a local bowling alley.  This invitation made my child happy.  She started planning how much fun she was going to have.  She couldn’t wait to go pick out a gift for her friend.

It is a simple thing… and yet it is not.  She is not an easy child socially.  She doesn’t always fit in.  But she is so excited about going to this birthday party.

Fitting “in” is not always easy whether you are a child or an adult.  We all have a need to be a part of the “in” crowd.  It is a couple of hours of acceptance for her which will be good for her self esteem.  Kids can be cruel if you dont wear the right clothes, have the right amount of money, live in the right neighborhood, belong to the right groups…those types of things.  We live in a small town so those kinds of issues are known about one another.

Yesterday we went out and picked out the important birthday gift…with the right birthday gift bag to put it in.  People who seem to fit in with others as youngsters have a healthy self esteem.   Sometimes my daughter will say, no one likes me…the boys pick on me and say mean things about me to the other kids.  Self esteem is affected by the actions of others around us when we are young and growing; self esteem is important.

This is an important tool for the teen years and adult years.  That self esteem keeps people from making poor choices when under stress, to make decisions like drinking or using drugs, or entering into healthy relationships when their peers put on the pressure.

Adults can learn alot from watching their children struggle with acceptance.  It must be taught to not let peer pressure rule them but at the same time…to be accepted by others can be important in learning to accept themselves with or without the stamp of approval from others.  It is growing their judgement skills on knowing when to let someone’s opinion matter enough to affect how they conduct themselves.

It is hard as a parent to let your child find their own way.  I just want to sometimes step in and say…my child is an awesome person.  Like her, treat her right, show her she is likeable for who she is….but i must let her make her own way in learning how to deal with fitting in and making good choices about who she lets influence her.

Those who can be mean or those who try to use their acceptance in the crowd to keep others out of it, have to be  understood by my daughter to learn who she can trust and why.

That way, she will understand more complex people as she grows older so as not to be manipulated or hurt.  Loving oneself and freely trusting others is easier when you learn to read others by their actions, body language and by how they treat you with respect.  My daughter is a smart girl; she will learn to let people into her life that know how to have healthy give and take relationships with each other.

We must learn to understand that by our words, our actions, our body language we have a big impact on others whether we are children or adults.  *  The party was great…she had fun…the others had fun…and she was still filled with excitement when it was over!  This is as it should be.

Robin Roberts from Good Morning America was a model today on GMA; she ruled the runway!  She took her place in the model line up and modeled a clothing line.  She is, as always, beautiful.  She did the runway without a wig.  She has been battling breast cancer for many months.

She said she did the show for all of those who are facing challenges.  She decided to do it without her wig because, that is who she is at the moment and she is embracing it.  As much as she has been a role model for others; she has been touched, i believe, herself by the stories of others and she shows a sense of amazement at the amount of support that she has been getting.  She is loved by many.

Robin always looks good…but, i do think they could have found a more flattering style of dress for her to wear.  She has a fabulous figure and she has gorgeous bone structure as well as a beautiful face; so, even though the color of the dress was a good choice for her…the style seemed too boxy in the shoulders or something.  Picky maybe, but you know…her courage and her grace always shines through no matter what she does or where she goes or what she wears!    Robin Rules the Runway!

I just want to take a minute and thank you, to all of the “nice guys” in the world…you know who you are…you are the guy who does nice things for others without being asked…without compensation…often without recognition for the things that you do.

THANK YOU!!!  You are appreciated whether anyone says it or not. I try to follow the golden rule and do unto others as you would have them do unto you, as well.  You can have a large impact on the world if you follow that rule; and you can really make a difference.

Today, one of you “nice guys” came along and plowed my driveway.  You did it a few days ago without compensation.  Today, i was here and i had a chance to thank you and to you pay you.  But, i know that you do those things just because of the kind of person you are.  Again, Thank you.

Today on the way home from the airport (through terrible winter- storm covered roads) we passed a young man on the side of the road; a car  next to him burried deep into a snow bank.  He was trying to shovel his way out.

I had my two teenaged sons with me as we passed this young man trying his best to dig his way out of the snow.  We (along with many , many cars) passed him.  I took notice and we turned around at the next available road and went back to help.

Turns out…the young man wasn’t the driver of the car…two young ladies were.  He lived near by and walked over to help them get out of the snow.  My boys pushed alongside of the “nice guy” and the ladies were on their way.  (The ladies by the way never said thank you, to the young man or to us but, that is ok…they were safely on their way out of a dangerous situation).

So, the “nice guy” really was a nice guy…he said thanks to us, as we went about our business.  I just wanted to say, pass on random acts of kindness if you get a chance.  You never know when you will be in need of a stranger’s help or kindness; it will come back to you!

Interesting to me, and maybe to millions of others, is the fact that in the last week, four underwater fiber optic cables have some how suffered cuts; effectively breaking connection for millions of internet users around the world.

It sounds as if those affected are in the Middle East, Iran, Pakistan, Asia and India.  Many of those places are used by businesses as an outsourcing service for data entry or programming.  This is costly as well as inconvient for many.

There are all kinds of speculations on just how this could happen.  Of course, it could happen with the shifting that occurs with the underwater plates that are affected by an earthquake, or something traumatic like that; but, that hasn’t been documented to my knowledge.  Or large ship anchors that could drag and potentially, break the cables.   But, four of those lines of communication have been cut at the same time by some type of event.

Then, there are those who question international terrorists or government agencies wanting to eliminate or control communications in certain areas.  There are so many unknown things about international government security…it does make you wonder.  Especially knowing that, Osama Bin Laden has not been located yet.  Could that be a possible explanation? I am sure that question will surface next on the news.  See what i mean…there is no end to questions, when things like this happen.

How will the telecommunications companies protect and secure these underwater cables? Is there any realistic way to do it? Is data or information vulnerable?  Glad i dont have to figure it out!

My family is scattered around the whole country.  The weather has always had the power to destroy; but, it seems in the last few years that it has been magnified.  Had to do some calling this morning to family in Kentucky, and soon will be calling Atlanta, Georgia  and other points south to check on our family members well-being.

My cousin told me this morning that they had no power.  Her cell phone didn’t work for a time.  Traveling this morning was impossible as roads were blocked with debris.  There were deaths in their town.  People lost their homes.  Others were injured; businesses and homes damaged.  Fires were a problem as well.  It is warm their now…but tonight the temperatures are supposed to drop to the 20’s and without power many will have no shelter or warmth.

It is times like these where people have to help each other out and fill a need if they are able.

Last night’s storms brought devastation through high winds, and tornadoes in the south because of warm air and cold air collision.  That storm also extends to Michigan…but instead of 60+ degree weather we are in the low 30’s.

The storm takes the form of freezing rain, sleet, and snow and powerhouse winds where we live.  It is only supposed to intensify as the day goes on.  Down south…the cold air is coming and they are probably in for more destruction.  There have already been over 44 deaths associated with last night’s storm down south.

On top of all of that…i have family and friends who have to travel today and tomorrow.  My husband is flying to Florida tomorrow morning.  I am praying that the weather improves greatly as we take our lives in our hands traveling the roads and the skies.  It is scary; i wish we could all just hibernate until the storms pass.

Reportedly, Britney Spear’s family has alledged in court documents, that Britney’s svengali of  recent times, manager Sam Lutfi has drugged her and threatened both her and her family with violence.  Some of the alledged things that have been said,  have such open contempt in them that it is nothing less than malicious in an attempt to destroy Britney’s whole world.

It sounds as if there must be some type of proof as the allegations have been submitted to the court and the court has  issued a temporary restraining order against him regarding contact with Britney and her home.  Without proof, a person submitting to the court false allegations would be held accountable.

There have also been reports that Britney’s home has been burgularized.  All of these things all rolled into one huge circus; is it any wonder why Britney has been so very out of control of late?  Maybe alot of it has been without her knowledge or consent.  It is like something out of a soap opera…too wild to even contemplate.

With all of the rumors of the media being notified of Britney’s comings and goings; even before they happened over the last few months…a sane person would wonder who would notify the media when it was so obviously not always something Britney wanted in her life.

Maybe someone with an ulterior motive for all of the press coverage and a need to be seen in the public eye on the arm of one of the most infamous women of our time.  A woman in need of someone to control her environment and to keep her in  desperate, constant need.   Does this whole situation bring to mind another very famous woman; a woman who also lived in a state of upheaval until she was destroyed…Marilyn Monroe.

It will be up to the court and the medical profession to put all of the pieces of the puzzle together to get to the bottom of this cesspool.  Maybe, just maybe, the medical intervention will have happened in the nick of time to prevent even more diaster in the lives of Ms. Spears and her family.  If any of it is true , then it is more than sad, it is evil.

Today is my mother’s lung biopsy.  I am worried for several reasons.  Her lymph nodes are enlarged.  She is having breathing problems.  She has never smoked a day in her life but she lived with smokers almost her whole life.

This biopsy is dangerous because she has too much pressure in her lungs.  I am praying that God protects and keeps her safe.  I am praying for a lot of things.  Mostly well-being.  * update:  Mom came through the biopsy just fine…but now we start the wait for the lab results.  The results could take up to a week or so.  Patience is not easy in this case.

Actor Wesley Snipes was acquitted of federal tax fraud and conspiracy but he was convicted for 3 counts of not filing tax returns.  Wow, can you imagine how much money he owes?  His lawyer says that he plans to make financial amends.

You hear horror stories of how much trouble people get into when they dont pay their taxes or if they are late.  There are horrible fees and penalties added to what they originally owe.

When a multi-millionaire gets paid as much as they do in the entertainment industry you would think that they would have multiple tax advisors.  From what was reported in the news lately, Wesley paid taxes up until 1999, when he was ill advised that he did not have to pay them.

Years ago…i remember hearing from a loved one that the IRS didnt have a legal right to demand that a person pay taxes, because they were not a proper legal entity.  I told this person, that i loved, to not believe such garbage.  I argued at the time, that if that were true, no one would pay taxes.

Thank God, the person that i care about didn’t listen to such crazy talk.   I would not want anyone, that i cared about, to make such a deliberate mistake, to listen to something, that goes against common sense.

I don’t see how any sane person could make the kind of money that Mr. Snipes made; and truly and honestly, believe that they would not have to pay taxes on it and not understand that they were required to file a tax return.

When you stop to think about how much good a person could do with the kind of money that was owed; it could make a person sick.  It is true, i think what the Bible says, the love of money can corrupt.

If the everyday “little people” who scrape every dime and nickle they own just to pay their bills and do right with their tax returns, year after year….you would think that those who are so financially blessed could do the same.

Regardless, it is sad to think that someone could have to leave their family; and go to prison, just over something so crazy as to be influenced by a group, person or organization that had a gripe with the government.  It has been previously, reported that Mr. Snipes may have to serve up to 3 years in prison because of his convictions.  Pay what is honestly owed…don’t try to be creative in this area of life.

It is official, the punk (Punxsutawney Phil) says six more weeks of winter.  Now Phil, the groundhog from Punxsutawney, Pa about 65 miles  northeast of Pittsburgh, Pa; he says he is never wrong.  Many believe him.

He does have nay sayers though….General B. Lee, Phil’s competition from Georgia did not see his shadow.  I don’t know about you…but, this girl is sick of winter…so i choose to go with General Lee.

It may be denial and all…but if so, i happily choose to believe that spring will come early.  Denial may be the only way i happen to get through what’s left of winter this year.  It is cold, costly and downright annoying to be stuck in a world of perpetual white for 6 months out of the year, i say!

By the by, it is also my sister in law’s birthday….have to remember to call her and say…do you know what day this is?  No matter whether she says it is her birthday or whether she says it is ground hog’s day…i can say why NO, it is the opposite of which ever one she chooses.  What fun!  Happy Birthday…or Happy Ground Hog’s Day…which ever you choose to celebrate.
