Senator Barack Obama and Dr. Dobson, from Focus on the Family, have brought out their dueling swords…their bible’s and their interpetations of the scriptures as it applies to each person’s choices in their daily living.
Dr. Dobson has allegedly said, that Senator Obama was ” deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the bible” in a speach that he gave to a Christian group, Call to Renewal, in June of 2006.
The comments that Barack Obama had made were in reference to some scriptures that Dr. Dobson feels don’t represent the traditional beliefs of the New Testament as applied to ways of living for many people of faith according to their understanding of God’s laws.
Barack Obama made some remarks that seemed to represent his beliefs that religious people should try to put their concerns in a universal language so that people of all belief systems could have an open debate rather than having religious differences keep everyone seperated. Some people take that sentiment as a desire to water down their standards and beliefs to be more amenable to meeting in the middle as opposed to standing up for what they believe.
We do not necessarily understand all of scriptures…parts of the Bible are difficult to understand, such as cultures and customs that are so opposite from our present day cultures and customs. Faith is just that…faith is believing in things that are unseen. Faith is strengthened by studying the word. Following the word (scripture) to the best of your understanding, of putting faith into action.
It is difficult to make a decision on which candidate to support when you have to rule out so many things that go against what you find acceptable…but, faith is a large issue for many voters. Trying to read between the lines and find the heart of the person making the statements, in the venue of public speaking is no easy task. Yet, it must be done.
There will be many more conversations, i think, clarifying where Mr. Obama stands on his decision making processes; and, how his faith will play a part in how he decides certain issues that would affect the American people were he to be elected to the office of Presidency of the United States of America.
Senator Barack Obama has allegedly responded to Dr. Dobson’s comment about the deliberate distortion of the Bible, by saying that, “someone would be hard pressed to make that argument”. He also says that he thinks that people will see that Dr. Dobson was just making things up for his own purposes. What does Dr. Dobson have to gain by such actions? His listeners hold him accountable to a high degree, according to his claim of Christianity…just as they will hold Senator Obama…as a person of faith.
In a campaign for the presidency, that is by no means over…it would be wise to make clear, exactly where he stands for all of the faith based people out there that he wishes to vote for him. Will Obama make decisions that support his faith; or, will he compromise his belief system to accomodate a working relationship with others who would cause him to lower his standards to a lesser degree?
So, the war of words and values has begun…as the time of election draws near; people will have to examine; what their belief systems are, and how they will use those belief’s to vote for the candidate that will best represent them in the highest office in the land. http://www.focusonthefamily.com/
