Under growing pressure, in a case that seems to continue to go from bad to worse…Detroit’s Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, was back in court on Friday. He was answering to the judge about claims of aggression towards a detective, who was trying to serve a subpoena for some of the hearings relating to the perjury charges; that the Mayor is facing. The investigation continues to reveal scandulous behavior relating to the conduct of the Mayor of Detroit. The perjury and obstruction of justice charges are alledged over text messages to his former top aide, Christine Beatty regarding their personal relationship.
The judge in the case, allegedly said that the Mayor’s “behavior was totally irrational”. The judge has changed the terms of the Mayor’s bail to include random drug tests, and a $7,500 bail post. The Mayor is also not allowed to travel outside of Michigan without the court’s prior approval. He is scheduled to appear back in court in early August.
The behavior in question was an alleged verbal and physical confrontation between the Mayor and the detective and his partner. The detective, Brian White told the judge that he and his partner, Joanne Kinney, were trying to serve subpoenas to witnesses in the perjury case. They spotted a vehicle with the name of one of the people they were trying to serve, in front of a home. They showed their badges to the mayor’s bodyguards and got the nod to go to the door. They asked for the person they were looking for to subpoena; and, they were told he was not there. That is when the alledged attack happened. The home turns out to be owned by the Mayor’s sister and her husband who is supposedly a relative of the person for whom the subpoena was intended.
The two detectives alledge that the Mayor was heard to cuss at them; and to yell to others who were present, to tell them nothing. He screamed at them to leave his family alone. Then, the Mayor supposedly came flying out of the door and shoved the detective into the female detective…possibly fracturing the lead detective’s hip. The Mayor also asked the female detective, who happens to be black, why she would work with detective Brian White. She seemed to feel that he was criticizing her for working with the detective in the investigation against him. This happened on Thursday and the hearing before the judge was held on Friday.
If this all happened the way that it was told to the judge…it sounds like the pressure of the case is building to a level which is hard to handle, for the Mayor of Detroit. Do you think he should just resign and deal with all of the legal consequences on his own time? Can he really be an effective Mayor of Detroit with all of these legal problems taking up so much of his time?
