For those of you considering piercing your body parts…it would be wise to heed the words of a young man who is now hospitalized with a MRSA infection.  A Missouri teen pierced his lip with an un-sterilized needle that he found in a medicine cabinet.

A few days later he found sores on his body and was achy all over.  He has been diagnosed with an MRSA infection that is resistant to antibiotics.  The doctors have said that the infection has spread thoughout his whole body.  He wants to get the message out to others not to do what he did because of the consequences.

Fitting in with your peers by piercing your body parts without proper medical guidance can cause more than one problem.  Unsterilized utensils can cause hepatitis, aids, or antibiotic resistent infections that can jepardize your life and your health.  Be informed and make smart decisions…if you still desire to be pierced talk to your doctor first.

If you are alive and reading this….take your finger and point it towards your middle…feel that indentation?  You are the proud owner of a belly button.  Do you know where your got your very own personalized lint collector?  From your mom…your belly button was a gift.

Did you know that your belly button gift could actually have the ability to save a life?   When you were born; if the technology would have been available (who knows when you were born 🙂 ), you could have donated the blood from your umblical cord.   Science in this area has discovered something great and powerful.   Blood from umbilical cords has stem cells in it.  I know , I know…some people do not agree with stem cell research.

However, MOST people who object to stem cell research, object because some people were lobbying the government about using stem cells from aborted fetuses.  Life is precious.  It should be treated with respect.  I personally don’t agree with using stem cells from aborted fetuses…i don’t agree with abortions.  However, i have nothing against using stem cells from umbilical cords.

In cases where a woman is going to give her child up for adoption…how great would it be if she could also send along information to the adoption agency that as a gift to that child…she also was having the child’s cord blood stored in case of medical need?  How loved would a child feel knowing that his or her birth mother cared enough about them to give them that?  What an amazing thing!

Everytime a human being is born; there is an umbilical cord that nourished that baby while it was in it’s mother’s womb.    In the past that cord and it’s blood was tossed away for lack of knowledge.  We have options these days.  We are just, within the last few decades, realizing how important those life giving umblical cords are to our well being, even after birth.

There are over 70 diseases being treated from umbilical cord blood.  People who suffer from debilitating diseases that compromise their immune systems could benefit from the gift that the umbilical cord blood provides.

Many mothers today, are now choosing to either put their child’s umbilical cord blood into a blood bank or donating it to help others.  It is almost like an insurance policy in case that child or a close family member should suffer a life altering disease, in the future.  The blood would be a “match” so that person would not have to wait months or years; trying to find someone who “matched” them close enough to save their lives.

If a child has relatives who have a disease in their family that could potentially harm them in the future…the precious stem cells, that would be stored from their own umbilical cord blood, could save their lives.  It could help to potentially save the life of their siblings; or, even a stranger if that very same cord blood was donated.

All an expectant mother has to do is, discuss it with her OB/GYN before delivering her child.  Motherhood is a wonderful thing…Fatherhood is no less wonderful…it is time that we realize how precious life is and honor the creator of all life.  What a miracle this type of donation is…tell others about this belly button gift that can save lives.  After all, Mother’s Day is sneaking up on us…if you are expecting…donating or saving that umbilical cord blood is a wonderful way of honoring all mothers.

By now, most of you have probably heard about the derranged daddy who destroyed the lives of at least 8 people.  They lived in Austria.  He locked his 18 year old daughter in his specially designed, tiny basement for 24 years.  He abused her;  impregnating her 7 times.  One of the babies died soon after birth; and, the father allegedly put the baby into the furnace.  What a psychological nightmare…something out of an almost unbelievable book of fiction; that noone wants to read.

Over the years, he had the daughter write a letter saying she could not care for her 3 of her children…after she “disappeared”.  The mother raised three of the children.  How could she do this and not push for some answers?  Did she push for answers?  Or was she just as abused in her own way by this man?   Three more of the children were locked in this basement along side of their mother.  This is the only world they have ever known.  The trauma, fear and pain they must all be in seems almost too much to bear.

Many people are saying…did the mother know> how could she NOT know?>why would she not push to know more>   There is so much that we do not understand at this time; i am afraid there will be even more horrors to come out in time.  For instance, who helped him build this basement with secretive rooms?  Why didn’t authorities search his home when the daughter went missing?  How did food and water…and other basic necessities keep them alive without SOMEONE KNOWING?  And if someone did know…how could they not do something to end this world of pain and suffering?  There are more questions than answers at this point in time.

The father admits this horror is true.  His daughter and her three children, that were confined, are getting help; but it may take a lifetime.  But truly, is any amount of help ever going to allow these poor people to live a normal life?   They certainly deserve to live in peace and safety.

What about the three children who lived “upstairs” with their grandmother and for lack of a better term GRANDFATHER?  Were they abused?  How will they process the fact that they lived right above their mother and siblings?  How will they deal with the knowledge that their mother and siblings lived like caged animals while they did not?  There is going to be long term mental health treatment for all of these people.

They have never had education, normal human interaction, health care, or freedom.  It must be a bit like flying into space and finding an alien environment and being forced to land there and function.

And let’s talk about the father…how does someone become such a detached person to cause such damage to those you are “wired” to love and protect in a normal way?  What a contemptible situation for human beings to be in.

Here is a news item that will make your head spin.  Think you are a good parent? What if you made a simple, honest mistake?   Do you understand that a simple misunderstanding could cause you to loose the custody of your child to a government agency…even for just a few days?  Child Protective Services is such of a powerful agency that even common sense can be overridden, at times, when the zeal to “protect” child from abuse or neglect.

In theory, CPS is in the business of keeping kids safe from abuse and neglect.  In it’s worst form….they cause irreparable damage.  I read an article today referring to a case of a father who went to a Tiger’s ballgame at the CoAmerica ballfield in Detroit.  He had his 7 year old son with him.

The father bought them some Mike’s Hard Lemonade.  For those of you who don’t know…it has alcohol in it.  The father did not know this.  The father works out of the country alot.  A security guard spotted the boy holding his bottle and confiscated it…and then, had the boy taken to an ER to be checked out.  From there it only gets worse.  CPS was called and the child was taken to foster care; this, all because of a lack of knowledge that the lemonade had liquor in it.

The child was checked out at the ER…and there was no measurable amount of liquor in his system.  Still the child was placed in foster care.  There was an aunt who is a social worker and foster parent, who lived in new england; she drove all night to get to Michigan to take custody of the boy.  When she got here…they told her she had to have a hotel room which she promptly went to get.

By the time she got back to CPS they had placed the child into a foster home which they would not disclose to the family.   A CPS worker, and a police officer said that placing the child into foster care was not necessary in their opinion; but, the supervisors insisted. The police officer at the hospital after interviewing the parties involved believed it was an honest mistake.  I am all for balancing safety and well being for children…but, it must be balanced with common sense.

Eventually, after the department forced the father to leave his own home for a week…the child was returned to his mother after two days of foster care.

I read a sad story this past week about a beautiful, 18 year old young woman who had CORRECTIVE BREAST SURGERY and died from complications of the surgery at a Florida hospital.  The young woman had physical problems with her breasts, which is why she was having the surgery in the first place.  The reason that she died is because she allegedy had a rare type of reaction from the anestheisia; from what news reports i read.

Some of the comments that readers of the article submitted were not only negative; but, actually condemed the young woman for having the surgery in the first place.  Understand, the was a medically CORRECTIVE, procedure.   She was not correcting a previous plastic surgery…it was to correct physical/medical issues.

Many of the comments made were putting the young woman down.  I wonder, if the young woman was having surgery to remove an appendix or some such other medical procedure; if she would be judged in the same way.  Or, is she criticized because the surgery was plastic surgery in nature; were they assuming she was trying to increase her cup size only?  There is a large segment of the population that is “gifting” their teenagers with plastic surgeries because they desire it and because it boosts their self esteem.  This is very controversial issue.

I personally feel that those who were harsh about her surgery and subsequent death were making an assumption that this surgery was about vanity as opposed to what she felt was a necessary procedure.

It seems, according to the articles that i read, that the rare reaction to the anestheisia runs in the young lady’s family.  When they have surgery with the anestheisia their bodies go into a very high temperature and reacts in a way that can cause death.

Unfortunately, there is no way to know ahead of time if a person’s body will react this way; until, there is a reaction.  Still, it does seem like there should have been at least a heads up notification to the medical personel doing the procedure; and maybe there was for all any of us know.  Still, it is a tragedy; this young lady wanted to grow up and be a part of the medical profession herself.

You really might want to think twice about kissing that guy or gal on the first date.  You may even want to think twice about kissing someone you’ve know for a long time after you read this.  Get real ya say?

Well, are you aware that about 95 % of the adult population (over the age of 20) has been exposed to the Epstein Barr Virus?  Never heard of it…..join the club…lots of people haven’t.

It is an infectious disease…it is transmitted through the saliva of an infected person.  Even someone who is healthy and doesn’t exhibit symptoms of the disease can pass it on.  Once a person is infected with EBV, they carry it for life…it may be dormant, but they still have it.  It can flare up at any time, stress and other illnesses can trigger an outbreak.

My sister has just been diagnosed with it.  This is after a couple of weeks of extreme illness, tiredness, and weakness.  The doctors that she saw in her family practice as well as in the emergency room did not know what was wrong with her.  It took my sister being proactive to get results…she went to a specialist who did some major tests and procedures before she got the results.

The epstein barr virus is an illness that attacks the immune system.  It can cause many problems such as fevers, sore throat, headaches, weakness, diarreaha, pain, swelling of the spleen, liver and other organs.  It can even get more complicated than that; as in some rare cases, it can evolve into some cancers and it can also affect the central nervous system or the heart.

Doctors are the only ones who can diagnose this or any serious illness.  It is important to seek medical care whenever an illness attacks because you just can’t know for sure if it is something simple or a very serious illness.

There really is no cure for EBV.  There are a couple of medications that may help …but, they also can attack healthy dna in a person, as well as the virus.  The best thing a person can do is to rest, drink lots of fluids and build up the immune system with a healthy diet.

Any information we have been able to find on the subject of EBV is somewhat vague and discouraging.  Even after recovery, you need to  remember that this is a virus that stays with you and can reappear in your future.  You must follow up with your doctor anytime that you think the virus is active again.

It is important to find a doctor who will listen to you, and who will do the appropriate testing.  You must listen to your own body(follow your instincts) and not let anyone tell you that it is all in your head or that you “probably” just have the flu.

No one knows your body as well as you do!   Push, push, push for the doctor to follow up with the blood work…and the ultra- sounds and whatever else it takes to get the care that you need.

Everyday there is another, more disturbing report on Britney Spears and her family.  Yesterday, she shows up almost two hours late for a court ordered deposition on her custody case. This young mother is either in denial about the importance of these proceedings or she is beyond being able to make rational decisions.  (more…)
