Raising children is one of the most important things a person can do.  It not only impacts a family; it impacts communities, businesses, organizations and individuals.  Raising children well; it is an art form.  In our world today, there are many things pulling at a family unit trying to divide it and conquor it.  It’s become the norm to expect families to break up; it is almost extra-ordinary to see a family survive all that life throws at it.

There are those around us who struggle in ways that we cannot see.  There are stresses that are normal; and then, there are those which have the ability to wreak havoc on our inter-personal relationships.

Un-expected pregnancies are one such stressor.  Un-planned pregnancies, no matter the age or marital status of the parents, can overload those involved; due to financial pressures, health issues, as well as, the emotional well-being of the parents.

Making a choice to become a parent is an important step; whether you become a parent biologically, or through the adoption process.  Each life that is conceived is precious and full of promise.  A pregnancy should be cause for celebration; however, sometimes circumstances can complicate the miracle of life.  Those type of situations are when the adoption option becomes a lifeline for those affected.

Organizations such as Bethany Christian Services are just, such a lifeline.  Of course, they offer more than just adoption services; there is counseling, foster care, estate planning, pregnancy counseling, post adoption care, orphan care, infertility ministry and embryo services.  They are all about building, healing, and restoring families here in the United States and around the world.

If your heart if full of blessings…or if you have a need…go to this link and check them out.  If your heart has been burdened by the complications of life; and, you have been touched by something greater than yourself…can you find a way to give back?  Support Bethany Christian Services either through a financial donation or maybe just by volunteering your time.  Check them out here:  www.bethany.org.

Do you see the suffering of those all around the world and feel helpless to do anything about it?  Those who are lonely, without the basic necessities of life, poor, starving, homeless or just without someone to love them; they need help.   Many of us do see the conditions of the world and suffer a sense of guilt at our own good fortune.  Do you feel something within your heart calling you to make a difference?  We all do…don’t turn off that sensitivity to the hurts in the world.  You can make an impact!

Maybe you already have the gift of making an impact; but, you wish to find ways of increasing that skill…may i suggest a book that will open windows into the system or skill set that will broaden your abilities to impact the world in a positive way?  It was written by Ken McArthur…a man who has felt the need from childhood to impact the world in a positive way.    The world is a big place with lots of needs.   You have a lot to offer, even if you don’t think that you do.  Find out what it is that you were created to do and be.  Read the book, make a commitment to channel positive energy into some kind of a lasting legacy…and make it happen!

Are you safe and warm; do you have food to eat and clean water to drink where you are?  You are blessed.  China is in the middle of a mass of miracles and mourning after the earthquake this past week.   Families are suffering; and, grieving losses of people and possessions.  Many are without a safe place to live.  This devastation is large scale and overwhelming to those in need as well as to the aid workers.

Getting clean water, food and shelter to all those who have need is no easy task.  Adding the additional strain of flooding from rivers, streams and lakes that have been blocked by debris and backed up water flow; only makes getting aid supplies into remote areas more difficult.

In a country that encourages a family practice of having one birth child, it has a significant impact because, the earthquake has taken the future from many families.  Many have honored the Chinese government’s policy to only have one birth child to cut down on the over-population problem.  Since this earthquake brought down many schools, hospitals and other institutions that housed children…the impact has devastating, life-long consequences on China’s infrastructure.

Those most vulnerable are the elderly and the young children.  The future can be bleak for those who only had one child to care for them in their elder years.  If they are past the age of child bearing…this can bring an end to their family line.

In the center of all of this madness, the Olympics are to be held in China in 81 days.  The International Olympic Committee has decided to pause the torch relay out of respect for the victims.  There will also be three days of national mourning, starting on Monday.

There have been stories of miracles; people who have been buried, under debris and rubble since the quake, who have overcome the circumstances and survived.  There will be many such stories as communications improve and time goes on.  One man in particular survived 139 hours trapped in rubble from a hospital and came away with minor bruising.

Each miracle brings hope to the hearts of those who have missing loved ones; as experts have said that, a person could survive in these conditions for up to a week as long as they had some access to water and the temperatures were at a survivable level.

If you are alive and reading this….take your finger and point it towards your middle…feel that indentation?  You are the proud owner of a belly button.  Do you know where your got your very own personalized lint collector?  From your mom…your belly button was a gift.

Did you know that your belly button gift could actually have the ability to save a life?   When you were born; if the technology would have been available (who knows when you were born 🙂 ), you could have donated the blood from your umblical cord.   Science in this area has discovered something great and powerful.   Blood from umbilical cords has stem cells in it.  I know , I know…some people do not agree with stem cell research.

However, MOST people who object to stem cell research, object because some people were lobbying the government about using stem cells from aborted fetuses.  Life is precious.  It should be treated with respect.  I personally don’t agree with using stem cells from aborted fetuses…i don’t agree with abortions.  However, i have nothing against using stem cells from umbilical cords.

In cases where a woman is going to give her child up for adoption…how great would it be if she could also send along information to the adoption agency that as a gift to that child…she also was having the child’s cord blood stored in case of medical need?  How loved would a child feel knowing that his or her birth mother cared enough about them to give them that?  What an amazing thing!

Everytime a human being is born; there is an umbilical cord that nourished that baby while it was in it’s mother’s womb.    In the past that cord and it’s blood was tossed away for lack of knowledge.  We have options these days.  We are just, within the last few decades, realizing how important those life giving umblical cords are to our well being, even after birth.

There are over 70 diseases being treated from umbilical cord blood.  People who suffer from debilitating diseases that compromise their immune systems could benefit from the gift that the umbilical cord blood provides.

Many mothers today, are now choosing to either put their child’s umbilical cord blood into a blood bank or donating it to help others.  It is almost like an insurance policy in case that child or a close family member should suffer a life altering disease, in the future.  The blood would be a “match” so that person would not have to wait months or years; trying to find someone who “matched” them close enough to save their lives.

If a child has relatives who have a disease in their family that could potentially harm them in the future…the precious stem cells, that would be stored from their own umbilical cord blood, could save their lives.  It could help to potentially save the life of their siblings; or, even a stranger if that very same cord blood was donated.

All an expectant mother has to do is, discuss it with her OB/GYN before delivering her child.  Motherhood is a wonderful thing…Fatherhood is no less wonderful…it is time that we realize how precious life is and honor the creator of all life.  What a miracle this type of donation is…tell others about this belly button gift that can save lives.  After all, Mother’s Day is sneaking up on us…if you are expecting…donating or saving that umbilical cord blood is a wonderful way of honoring all mothers.

This past two weeks has been rough on a young widow.  Her husband was killed in Irag on March 31.  Kynesha Dhanoolal, the widow, wanted to save his sperm as she and her husband had talked often, of having children together.  She wants to be the mother of his children.

It appears that a will was not on file anywhere and the military had papers designating Kynesha’s husband’s (Dayne) mother as the person to whom the right of handling his remains; should anything happen to him.  It would appear that Kynesha’s mother- in- law at first was not in agreement of harvesting her son’s sperm, initially.

Days were spent in discussion before an agreement took place.  Experts say that the sperm may not be viable anymore.  It seems after a man’s death…the sperm loose their mobility and their viability to fertilize an egg within hours.  The harvesting didn’t take place until 4 days after his death and that means that the potential to create a baby has definately lessoned.  It would be a miracle it sounds like if a child was to be conceived.

I can understand wanting a baby together.  I can understand having the choice to have the child of her husband…however, he was in the military.  He is unfortunately no longer alive to help her raise the child or support the child financially.  This whole situation will open a bunch of legal and moral questions.

If she is blessed with a pregnancy from her husband’s sperm…will her pregnancy be covered under military benefits?  Since the father is no longer alive would the child be entitled to social security benefits?  Would tax payers be responsible for the support of this future child.  Since the potential conception can only take place by artificial insemination…will that be procedure be paid for by military benefits? With the father gone; who will be a positive male role model for the child?

Having lost her husband…i am sure all of those issues are not at the forefront of Mrs. Dhanoolal’s mind.  She is grieving the loss of her young husband.  She is grieving the loss of her dreams of having a child with the man she loves.  I am sure she is regretful of having to force such a request on the mother of her husband as she is grieving the loss of her son.  This, I am sure has added another aspect of grieving for both women.  If, after having to wait for those four days, a pregnancy does not occur will the daughter-in-law blame the mother-in-law for not agreeing sooner?

If the expert is correct and the sperm is no longer able to produce a pregnancy…the grieving will continue for both women.  There will be no child or grandchild from the man that they both loved.  The war in Iraq has stolen another generation from another family.  The whole thing is very sad.  This service man and his family has sacrificed what so many others have sacrificed before him…a future with their loved ones.

At the close of today’s Good Morning America, Robin Roberts announced that later today was the LAST of her radiation treatments…then she said that she wanted to dance… she asked the audience to dance with her….and, she gave credit where credit is due…Praise Jesus!  I am so very happy for Robin.  I am sure angels are in heaven dancing for joy as well.  All praise and worship go to God above.

May God continue to flow blessings her way and to all those battling cancer.  Robin thanked everyone for their support and prayers.  She encourages us all to continue to lift up and encourage those going through cancer treatments.

Encouragement, support, and a listening ear are all just as critical to survival as the chemo & radiation treatments.  Bless those in the medical profession giving it their all to fight cancer; it isn’t easy to be on the front lines.  There are victories and there are losses and it is difficult to give to others continuously and not be discouraged by the losses.  Encourage a caregiver today as well!

I don’t know about you…but, over the last few years, anytime any of my friends or relatives have gone to the doctor about some major sickness/disease; the doctors have not been able to diagnose it.

Now, it isn’t because they all go to the same incompetent doctor or anything like that.  These are all well respected, professional doctors.  What is it then, why is it that illnesses/sickness/diseases are so very hard to pinpoint over the last few years or so?

When the body functions as it should…it really is a major miracle as far as i am concerned.  With all of the things that can go wrong…when everything goes right…it is truly and honestly because God has designed a marvelous thing…the human body.

When things go wrong…it is scary and confusing.  At the moment, i have a sister that is very ill and no one seems to be able to figure it out and she is getting weaker and weaker.  I know several people in the same sort of position.  It is frightening.

So, I lift up those people to God and pray that wisdom is bestowed upon the doctors and nurses who treat patients that are ill when there is no clear cut diagnosis…may healing flow over those God has created!

This is a touchy subject.  I work with teens in a youth group.  I know the typical thought behind common references to hormones.  Some of those comments are based on fact.  Hormones will make you do things and act in ways that you do not always understand.

Hormones are one wild roller coaster ride all through-out life.  The most chaotic time will be the teen years.  It is an extreme high and low each and every day.  Yesterday we had several teens being ruled by their hormones; making decisions that plunged other teens into the depths of despair.  Breaking up and choosing new partners all while doing so in painful and humiliating ways!  Ugggg…it is so hard growing up.

At the same time, there was concern over some “missing in action” teen couple who were being unchaperoned in a very tempting environment.  Hmmm…not my kids; and yet, the parents knew and allowed the situation.  Is this right?  Consequences can be life-long.  Teaching and reminding them that Christ wants only good things in life for us and yet at the same time, telling them that they must wait till marriage is a bit like temptating them as well.

Back to the whole generic subject of hormones….they are our nemisis and our friend as human beings.  Our bodily organs function according to the natural levels of the hormones in our systems.  When they are out of whack it can cause all kinds of problems.

Couples wanting to start their families have to depend on the healthy well-being of those hormone levels to be in peak performance or their fertility is at risk.  Everything has to be just right for the miracle of birth.

Each stage of life our hormones play a different part.  In menopause, the fluctuations of those levels have to be watched not only for comfort but also for health reasons.  Earlier in life we worry about how our hormones affect our moods and our relationships.

Then there is the 28 day menstrual cycle for most women.  I was a victim of that roller coaster today.   Did i mention that i dont like roller coaster rides?  🙂  My poor husband was an innocent bystander.

He read about a free adult full blooded yellow lab.  It needed a new home because the owners are loosing their home any day and can’t keep it.  They haven’t had any takers.  My husband wanted the dog because the husband of the woman advertising the dog said that if the dog wasn’t gone in a few days it would have to be put down.  It is six years old.  It hasn’t had it’s shots or license but it is in good health.

My husband wanted to “save” the dog.  I didn’t want the dog to die.  But, the problem is that just last weekend i gave in to pressure (several years of it) from my children and my husband to get a dog.  Instead, we got two five week old puppies.  Black lab mix puppies to be exact.

They are fun…they are cute and they are a whole lot of work.  We are training them and getting up every two hours.  On top of all of that…we live in michigan and times are tough.  It is hard enough to financially meet the needs of your own family without taking on extra responsibilities which i felt we had already done by taking on two new puppies.

However, i was devastated to think that if we didn’t take in this adult female dog that it would die.  I was torn up as well, knowing that my husband not only wanted to save the dog; but also, has been wanting to get a full blooded lab again like we used to have.  All in all, i made myself sick with sadness and emotion.

I had to distance myself for a few minutes and take a hot bath and re-group my emotions.  In the meantime, my husband called the dog owner only to find that they did get another call for the dog; but, they were waiting to find out if we were going to take her before they had the other family come to look at the dog.

In the end, my husband and I are in agreement that if the other family doesn’t take the dog then the dog owner was instructed to call us back and we would take the dog long enough to find an appropriate home for her.  I feel so much better.

I still would have felt at crossroads about the poor dog’s situation, even if i wasn’t hormonal…but i don’t think i would have made myself sick with the situation.  I just felt so bad for the dog and at the same time…knew that we weren’t in the position at the moment to take on all three dogs permanently.

Jennifer Lopez gave birth to her twins early this morning.  She had a boy and a girl as has been speculated about for months.  I am sure she is filled with joy, anticipation, and even probably some anxiety.

She has waited a long time for this moment. Her dream of motherhood has now been accomplished.   May God grant them a lifetime of blessings as a family unit.  Jennifer’s husband Marc Anthony has two other children from his first marriage.  With two talented musical parents these children should be genetically gifted in the world of music someday.

There has been no announcement yet on the names of the children and rumor has it that the first pictures of the twins are being sold to a magazine for mega money.

There is always such a big media blitz when celebs have their babies when it comes to the first photo’s.  I say if you are going to be in that situation just give rights to who ever you want for publishing the first photo…but if money is exchanged…do something good with it and donate a major portion of it to charity or something.

All in all…these are two new precious lives.  I am sure they will be loved, protected, and cherished as all newborn children should be.

Great news today, the man and his three children who were missing in the northern part of California were found.  They went out on their annual trip to find a Christmas tree when they encountered extremely bad weather.

I am sure as they are checked out physically and stabilized that their story will prove to be nothing less than inspiring.  The best news is that they will be home in time for Christmas for their loved ones to celebrate with.  I feared that it would end badly.

While they were missing, the mother of the children said that her ex-husband was her best friend.  That is refreshing to hear ex-spouses speak not only respectfully of each other; but, also with great care.  Another Christmas miracle if you ask me that they are all found!

It is nice to hear something on the news that has a happy ending for a change.  Thank you God!
