As a person living in the midwest, in one of the coldest, snowiest winters in the last 25 years…i have to say i was irritated when i read that since President Obama moved into the White House the thermostat has allegedly gone up.  For a man who made it part of his campaign to encourage Americans to sacrifice for the world environment and to take on a personal responsibility regarding climate changes; I am offended by an article that i read today that says the Oval office is like a tropical hot house, warm enough to grow orchids in.  Someone needs to hold this administration accountable in these types of areas…turn down the heat on President Obama.

Across our nation right now, many Americans are without electric or typical normal heat sources because of an ice storm, that is going to take weeks to fix.  This is during some truly challenging temperatures as our country transitions between winter and spring.

Part of the perception of the recent, more relaxed environment in the Oval office…meaning that visitors no longer have to wear suit jackets when they enter in like the former administration; is really more about personal comfort levels.  It isn’t mainly about being relaxed in that room as much as it is about it being warm; so that wearing a suit and tie would be really uncomfortable.  While I applaude the more informal feel to this Presidency…I have to say that even the White House staff and aides have commented on the temperature change; including his chief of staff, David Axelrod who  allegedly, made the statement about the orchids growing in there.

The article I read said something to the effect that even though President Obama comes from Chicago…he was born in Hawaii, and he likes being warm.  Well, no fake…most of us don’t enjoy being colder than is comfortable…but , what about that personal sacrifice he was talking about before?  I dont want to bust his chops on this or any other issue just for the sake of it…but…this subject is a little close to home when my own family has to keep the furnace set on 58-60 degrees because of the necessity of the high cost of heating our home.

Another, more important reason this is so maddening is that in my home state…there have been several people who have frozen to death.  A man by the name of Marvin E. Schur, 93 years old, froze to death recently in Bay City, Michigan because the electric company put a limiter on his electric service and his home power was shut off…effectively causing his heating source to stop working.  He died…come on…was that President Obama’s fault….no!  However, when i hear polyanna remarks justifying his higher temperature on the thermostat in the Oval office; it makes me angry to know that others are SUFFERING AND DYING when there are others who have so much and are wasteful with it.  It is not right.

So please President Obama…you have so many other more important things on your plate…turn down the heat in the White House so that your actions match your words and your call for personal responsibility.   That way, those who would otherwise be inspired by you and your goals of helping our nation turn towards more green living and a more positive use of our energy sources can get on board without having to defend your conflict of words and actions!  Be an inspirational leader so that you can have a powerful impact on our country with responsibile energy use.

Talk about a intense flare up of a conversation.  This week on The View, a conversation took place that was shocking in it’s intensity between the races.  The show got onto the topic of conversation of using the “N” -word because of a conversation recorded between (Reverend and i use the term lightly here, only as a matter of clarifying which Jackson made the comment) Jesse Jackson and another person.   Jesse Jackson, Jr. was horrified that his father made such statements; and publicly chastised him for doing so.

In that conversation, Jesse Jackson made a couple of inappropriate comments regarding Barack Obama.

It seems that Jesse Jackson takes issue with the way that Sen. Obama speaks to the African American population.  He said it made him want to rip off his n–s.  Then later, it was also revealed that he allegedly, also used the other “N”- word.

On the view, Elisabeth Hasselback made a comments saying, that she felt it was inappropriate to use that word in private or in public.  Wow, did the other “ladies” of the view take issue with her. (more…)

The power of words has never been illustrated in such an alarming way, until recently.  Today on Good Morning America Ashley Grills, aged nineteen, talked about her part in an internet prank on a social networking site that allegedly incited a thirteen year old young lady, Megan Meier, to commit suicide.

The horribly cruel prank was allegedly played upon Megan as a way to find out if Megan was talking behind another young lady’s back.  Ashley says that the other young lady, unnamed at this point, was an off again, on again friend of Megans.  The friendship turned sour and the young lady and Ashley wanted to see if Megan was talking badly about her.

Ashley alledges that the young lady’s mother, Lori Drew, also was involved in the prank.  What they did was to create a profile of a young man, named Josh, who would initiate an online romance with Megan on the social networking site.  It is important to remember that people can “pretend” to be anything they want online; you can’t read the body language of someone online.

Megan and “Josh” started up an online relationship.  Back and forth it went…creating interest in one another until; Ashley says she felt badly about the prank.  So, she started saying mean things…and, so did others on the social networking site.  Ashley says that she wanted to end the “online relationship” and told Megan that the world would be a better place without her in it.

In Megan’s house there was a horrible outcome.  Megan’s mother was aware of Megan’s upset.   They talked but, Megan stormed off and went to her room.  Twenty minutes or so later, Megan’s mother opened the bedroom door to find that Megan had hung herself in her closet in despair over the online words and actions.

Ashley says that the other young lady’s mother, Lori Drew, was involved in writing some of the verbal interactions with Megan.  The news reports state that Ashley has been given immunity to testify against the other young lady’s mother, Lori Drew, in court.  She says that the mother was aware of the whole process and involved.  For the record,  i have read statements that the mother, Lori Drew, denies any involvement.

The fact remains that the very young Megan is dead.  Her family is devastated.  Their lives will never be the same.  Their child was vulnerable and was destroyed.

Ashley says that she is taking responsibility for her actions.  I don’t know what that means other than admitting her involvement.  I would  imagine it would be hard to live with the knowledge that her actions directly influenced Megan Meiers to hang herself.

It would be a very valuable tool, if indeed Ashley is sincere in her regrets, if she was to start some kind of community service going into schools and educating young people about the dangers of online harassment.  The old saying, sticks and stones may break your bones; but, words will never hurt me, is not true.  Words have power to influence others…both in good ways and in bad ways!  We must communicate the dangers in harassing others.

There may be legal repercussions in the future for the participants of this prank.  Whether they can prove the mother’s involvement is not clear at this time.  However, it doesn’t change the fact that this whole situation has had long lasting consequences for all of those involved; It is sadness personified.

The next time that you are on a website where comments can be made…it is wise to remember that there is still a standard of accountability to be upheld.  Our words and actions have impact on others…why not make that impact a positive influence on others?  Look here, http://theimpactfactor.net?id=35 and see if you can impact others positively in your personal life, business life, or spiritual life! http://theimpactfactor.net?id=35.

Words are windows into people’s thoughts, lives and cultures.  Reading is a great way to learn, to escape and to explore.  I love to read and I tried hard to get my children interested in reading at young ages.  During the summer we are at the library at least three times a week.  It is a great way to show them all that they can enjoy through books.
